Copper Mountain, CO: New Weapon Against Avalanches

Robin Azer | | Post Tag for Industry NewsIndustry News

Copper Mountain in Colorado is enjoying one of the snowiest December’s on record. But along with all that sought after powder comes the inherent risk of avalanches. In effort to remedy the danger, Copper Mountain has unveiled a new machine called the Avy Roller.

Historically, ski patrol members would have to arduously stamp down the snowpack wearing their ski boots. The Avy Roller mimics this technique, but in a more sophisticated and thorough fashion.

“It’s a great tool to have in our wheel house to work our avalanche terrain.”’

Max Tyler, Copper Ski Patrol

In place of many, now just the snowcat driver and a ski patrol member to operate the remote control of the Avy Roller are needed. This makes quick work of the job allowing more terrain to be opened safely all the sooner.

Copper Mountain is not the only ski resort in Colorado making good use of the Avy Roller. Also employing this technique are Telluride, A-Basin, and Winter Park.

This week’s forecast for Copper Moutain: snow.
