Crystal Mountain, WA. Conditions Report: Deep Powder Days Return

Mother nature and old man winter must have mended their problems and kicked off another awesome storm cycle. Some down time of warm and wet days with squishy schmoo, cold groomers and dust on crust was fun to build some skill or finally take a rest day. So last Thrusday when it started to snow again it was a godsend!

Storm day of ripping fresh powder through Northway. Parking lot runs were all time if avoiding the avalanche chunder under steeps.  After getting bored on the north side we head over to Queens to lap Chair 6 and some tree riding. Deep powder that the weekend crowd missed in Avalanche Basin. South back was open but I didn’t feel the need to have to hike for anything when low hanging fruit off REX was still in perfect shape.

Chair 6 to the King traverse has been surprisingly smooth and free of rock so hitting a few laps into Silver Basin was in order. Killer day with locals training for the 1st annual March of the Kings race. I made sure to stay out of the traverse for them while just strolling along. Mount Rainier had evidence of the past weeks higher freezing level but a fresh coat of snow on her. All time skiing back there.

The avalanche danger was still “considerable” so I stayed out of the backcountry waiting for some good conditions. Doing a few low angle tours was good for the legs and the reward was good! What I would give for just some flat terrain to skate ski in…. Check out NWAC here for current avalanche forecast. Still some layers down low in there, one of my favorite weather models here has the temp spike and weather history.
Took a nice long walk over some variable snow into Morris creek to bail and boot back up 3 Way Peak. Not the best conditions for it with a touchy snowpack but a worthwhile adventure.

If venturing into the backcountry, please know where you are going. There are some really poor skin tracks out there and my “training loops” so don’t just blindly follow them. Too often I see folks heading up avalanche terrain because a track is already in. Know before you go please.

Shaping up to be a sick weekend with goods off piste and railing groomers!  See ya out there!
