An inbounds avalanche occurred at Nasu Onsen ski resort, 95 miles north of Tokyo, on Monday morning at 9:20am local time.

8 school children are missing and feared dead, rescue officials told Kyodo News.  3 others are missing and some injuries have been reported.

It appears that 50-70 school children were at the ski resort partaking in a mountain climbing class.

Rescue efforts are underway.

More people may be missing and or injured.

About 33cm (12″) of snow fell in the Nasu Onsen area between midnight and 9am on Monday, according to Japan Meteorological Agency data.
