June Mountain ski resort (ski resort with some of the best backcountry access in the USA) caught on fire yesterday.  The fire started at the base of the mountain and as of last night was as large as 35 acres.  Some of June Mountain ski resort’s buildings are threatened.

Last night, evacuations were mandatory east of June Mountain and south of Highway 158 (June Lake Loop).  Highway 158 is closed at its south junction with Highway 395.  158 is also closed north of Rainbow Lane.

Power has been shutdown in the town of June Lake at the request of firefighters.

The cause of the fire is unknown but currently being investigated.

June Mountain has had its share of difficult times lately.  June was closed for the 2012/13 season due to financial issues.  June Mountain is owned by Mammoth Mountain.

I was caused by June Mountain employees using heavy equipment that made a spark…….relax, the ski area isnt on fire….it started at the base of Gull Canyon and burned east and up out of bounds towards town..its 80% contained…copters are here right now[thurs morning] to finish putting out hot spots.
