Winter officially begins in the southern hemisphere today as Mount Ruapehu will start their lifts turning, the first resort to do so. And lift tickets will be free. Yep, free lift tickets on opening day!

Ruapehu is home to the two largest ski areas in New Zealand, Whakapapa & Turoa. The lower mountain of Whakapapa will be open this weekend, and Turoa is scheduled to open June 29th, but resort officials are hoping that with the recent heavy snowfall they can bring that date forward.

Ruapehu boasts New Zealand’s longest ski season, generally opening early June right through until late October. On Tuesday they reported 9″ of fresh snow.

With heavy, early season snow already the omens are there for a great season. Bring it on!
