The 1960 Winter Olympic Games at Squaw Valley, CA, were special for California and the United States for a multitude of reasons, first and fore most, it was the first Winter Olympic Games ever held in the Americas. Alex Cushing completed the impossible by convincing the IOC that the winter olympic games should have been held at his very own Squaw Valley USA, away from the Alps that got so much attention on the ski race circuit. What originally started as a publicity stunt by Cushing, soon became much more, as the IOC decided on Squaw Valley to host the 1960 Winter Olympic Games.

The 1960 Winter Olympic Games garnered much attention, as it was the first Olympic Games to be broadcast on television. Also, the United States beat the Soviet Union in hockey during that olympics, 20 years before the famed 1980 Olympic team. It was the first time America was on the Olympic circuit, and the Americas did not disappoint. It was also the last time that Olympic Athletes ever stayed under the same roof, ate together, hung-out together, and so on. The 1960 Olympics at Squaw Valley are special, and continue to be so today.
