On March 8th, 2017 scientists from the Federal Research Institute WSL set off a massive avalanche in Vallee de la Sionne, Switzerland. It was set off using explosives that were thrown out from a helicopter. The purpose of triggering this avalanche was to gather data about the slide using seismic sensors and video. This slide was absolutely massive, it made it 2.5km all the way down to the valley floor. Thankfully, no one was hurt in the slide and the data collected will be very useful.
