Whistler, B.C. Conditions Report + Photo Tour: Opening Weekend and Overhead Powder

Not a bad first couple turns to make this season.

What an opening for Whistler Blackcomb!  I personally could not make it up for their official opening days, and had some serious fear of missing out.  From photos on Instagram and word of mouth from buddies up at the resort, the opening few days were some of the best in a long time.  People had photos of overhead powder and it looked unreal.

stoke
The stoke was high with all the awesome snow to ski.

The question for me was, “Is it going to last until the weekend?”  I drove up Friday night, through the rain. Went to bed at 11pm and it was still raining out.  Woke up the next day with 48cm in the last 24hrs!  The stoke was high.  Went down shoveled the driveway and headed to hill.

chairlift
The view from the chair this morning was awesome. Powder trenches for the people.

First run of the year was a classic Jersey Chair line lap.  Pretty much all the tracks from the previous day had filled back in, and yes it was deep.  Throughout the day we found overhead pow even until our last run.  Crystal chair opened on Blackcomb which made for a good time, and the trees out by 7th Heaven made for some secluded pow.

The snow was fairly light by Whistler standards.  It was just really deep so if you were setting a complete fresh track you could almost go straight and not go to fast.  For this early in the season, the coverage was pretty solid up high. I did not hit any unexpected rocks or bushes underneath the snow, so the base is looking really good.  I was also able to ski down to the upper lots on Blackcomb at the end of the day.  Overall a pretty unbelievable start to the season, and am excited to see how the rest goes!
