skip to 3:15 for the 100-foot wave

Yesterday, October 28th, 2013 was a big day in Nazare, Portugal.  Waves were topping out at near 100 feet.  The world’s best big wave surfers were there and Carlos Burle from Brazil was among them.

The current world record holder, Greg McNamara, (78-foot wave at Nazare last year) was there as well, but this day would belong to Carlos.

“It was luck. We never know when we will be catching the wave. I still hadn’t surfed any wave and everyone had already had their rides. Maya almost died. For me, it was a big adrenaline moment to get back there after what happened.” – Carlos Burle told Surfer Today

Once the waves are this big, it’s relatively random who will end up with the biggest wave, these guys just have to go for it, and some waves stand up a bit taller than others.

Carlos Burle’s wave yesterday is being estimated at around 100 feet.  Greg’s wave from last year was initially estimated at 100-feet, but once measured, was called 78-feet, which was still the largest wave ever ridden.

Guinness World Records will be analyzing this wave to determine its size and wether or not it is a new world record.

It will be very interesting to see how big this actually was.  We’re guessing it will be in the ballpark of Greg McNamara’s 78-foot wave.  Hopefully, it’ll be a touch bigger and we’ll have a new world record.  Congrats regardless, Carlos.
