Colorado’s Pikes Peak saw its first dusting of snow of the season this morning, a sign that summer is giving way to winter.
This initial dusting is not uncommon for Pikes Peak, where the high elevation permits snowfall in every month of the year. Such brief snow episodes are characteristic of September on Colorado’s peaks, where conditions can turn swiftly even as the lower elevations remain warm.

A Hazardous Weather Outlook is in place through Thursday, and the extended forecast has snow in the forecast most evenings. However, daytime highs in the mid-40s mean the snow won’t last long.
According to Wikipedia, Pikes Peak is the highest summit of the southern Front Range of the Rocky Mountains in North America. The ultra-prominent 14,115-foot (4,302.31 m) fourteener is located in Pike National Forest, 12 miles (19 km) west of downtown Colorado Springs, Colorado. The town of Manitou Springs lies at its base.
