Amid a governance shakeup, French organizers for the 2030 Alpes Olympics have recently appointed Vincent Roberti as interim president. The move comes a week after the departure of Edgar Grospiron, who served as the president for just 18 months.

Roberti currently serves as the organizing committee’s director general. An ‌extraordinary general assembly approved a temporary rule change allowing Roberti to perform his duties in both positions.

“This solution is intended to ensure the stability of the organization’s governance and the continuity of the organizing committee’s activities while awaiting the appointment of a new president,” the assembly said in an Associated Press article.

However, the governance surrounding the 2030 Olympics has been anything but stable. Grospiron’s exit last week, confirmed by at a meeting of the International Olympic Committee’s executive board, marked only the latest disruption of the Games’ preparations. When the 1992 moguls gold medalist was appointed, he inherited a project that was already behind schedule when the French Alps’ bidding process began in 2023. When it was formally chosen as host in 2024, it was already on the tightest timeline of any modern Olympic host, according to the Associated Press. Tight timelines alongside long periods of tension within the organizing committee ultimately led to Grospiron’s departure.

“After several months of governance-related tension, I have concluded that the conditions necessary for me to continue this journey are no longer in place,” Grospiron wrote in a LinkedIn post. “Some will undoubtedly call this a failure or an act of giving up. I prefer to say that, within the scope of my role, I reached the point where it was more appropriate to hand over the reins than to cling to the position.”

“I was chosen to lead this project in February 2025,” he continued. “At the time, no one could have imagined the scale and complexity of the task: every challenge awaiting us—inherent to any Olympic and Paralympic project—was amplified by a tight schedule, a constrained budget, and a shifting political landscape, to the point where an entire ice sports cluster changed regions midway through the process.”

Before Graspiron’s exit, the 2030 Olympics lost its chief operating officer, Cyril Linette, who also left after months of tension within the organizing committee. According to the AP, Linette and Graspiron had been in stark disagreement with each other regarding the direction of the Games.

In addition to governance issues, hosting plans have also experienced significant reshuffling. The IOC executive board recently confirmed Lyon, France, as the host city following the election of far-right mayor Eric Ciotti in the previously planned host city of Nice, France. Ciotti had refused to allow the use of the Allianz Riviera stadium, home to Nice football club, as the temporary venue for the men’s hockey competition. The host city switch, coming less than four years before the Games, marked an unprecedented move by the IOC. This week, IOC delegates will visit Lyon to inspect proposed venues after the relocation of ice sports from Nice.

Despite the plethora of shakeups, the IOC is maintaining its confidence in the 2030 Olympics.

“The economic fundamentals of the project are solid, with the first sponsor onboard and others expected to join soon. The project also benefits from the development of a robust venue master plan,” the IOC said, according to the AP.

While the 2030 Olympics seem distant, for the IOC and the organizing committee, there is much work to be done in not a lot of time. The recent switch from Nice to Lyon adds a layer of complexity to the plans, and by appointing Roberti, the IOC and Alpes organizing committee hope they can find some long-term stability. However, in order to have Lyon and the other locations fully prepared for the Games, organizers need to quickly move from their current restructuring phase to taking action.
