According to the Sierra Avalanche Center, 3 backcountry skiers triggered and were caught in an avalanche in Hourglass Bowl on Tamarack Peak in the Mt. Rose area of Lake Tahoe, NV yesterday.

It’s being reported that the skiers caught in the avalanche were slammed against rocks and trees and that one of the skiers may have broke his ankle.

Report From Sierra Avalanche Center:

“Details about the party involved with this avalanche are limited at this point. This avalanche occurred in the Hourglass Bowl on Tamarack peak. It failed on a faceted layer near the ground within the old snow. Rapid loading of heavy new snow was occurring when the avalanche happened. Up to 3’+ of new snow was deposited in this area on top of a shallow snowpack that was 6-12” deep on northerly aspects.

“I spoke with one of the party of 4 or 5 that were involved in the slide on my skin up. Three people ( I believe) were caught in it, two of which were slammed into trees/rocks but were ok. Another skier with a possible broken ankle. A couple lost skis as well.”
