Get your waterproof mascara and your most aerodynamic gorilla suit ready — Palisades Tahoe, California, has officially confirmed the return of the 34th Annual Cushing Crossing. Widely considered the “Granddaddy” of all pond skims, this legendary springtime rite of passage is set to take over the mountain on Saturday, May 2, 2026.

Unlike the man-made pond skims found at most resorts come springtime, the Cushing Crossing is famously held on a natural pond, giving it a unique (and often bone-chilling) character that has cemented its status as the premier event of the Sierra spring season. Starting at 1:00 p.m., a brave field of participants will attempt to defy physics by skimming across the water on skis and snowboards, all while being graded on their style, costumes, and—inevitably—the spectacular nature of their sink.
Celebrity Judges and Local Stakes
The stakes are high for those looking to avoid a polar plunge. A panel of local celebrity judges and a duo of the industry’s top emcees will be on hand to preside over the chaos. This year’s category winners will walk away with a massive haul of prizes from a heavy-hitting sponsor lineup, including Smith, The North Face, Darn Tough, Smartwool, Chomps, and Honey Stinger.
