China’s state news agency, Xinhua, is reporting that a 60-year-old Australian and three Tibetan porters were killed by an avalanche near Mount Everest yesterday.  They were camping without permission in a restricted area at the base of Mount Everest when an avalanche struck their camp.  The avalanche was the result of a large snowstorm that had recently hit the area.

They were part of a tourist group made up of 4 Australians and 6 Tibetan porters and guides.

Xinhua also reports that 86 tourists were stranded on Monday at the North Base Camp of Mount Everest at over 17,000-feet due to a large snowstorm.  Rescuers were able to evacuate those tourists without incident on Monday.

This is very sad news as these tourist were not mountain climbers but rather, simply wanted to enjoy the splendor of Mount Everest from a safe distance.  Lets all shift our brains into avalanche mode as North American winter approaches.
