A climbing expedition on Mount Elbrus, Europe’s highest peak, ended in tragedy after five Bosnian climbers died when a violent storm struck high on the mountain, Russian authorities confirmed on Sunday, July 26. The group of seven climbers became disoriented after weather conditions deteriorated rapidly during their ascent of the 18,510-foot (5,642-metre) volcano in Russia’s Caucasus Mountains, according to investigators.
Two members of the expedition survived and were rescued by emergency services, while recovery operations for the victims have been hampered by severe weather, including strong winds and poor visibility.
According to Russia’s Investigative Committee, the group encountered rapidly worsening conditions on the evening of July 25. One climber managed to descend and alert authorities, reporting that two members of the team had become seriously ill at an altitude of approximately 16,730 feet (5,100 metres) and had died. Rescuers later located the second survivor along with the bodies of the remaining victims.
Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry (EMERCOM) initially recovered two bodies at an altitude of 17,550 feet (5,350 meters) before locating the remaining three. Recovery efforts were delayed as deteriorating weather made helicopter and high-altitude rescue operations unsafe. Authorities have since confirmed that all five victims have been found.
Although Russian officials did not initially identify the climbers, Bosnian Foreign Minister Elmedin Konaković confirmed the victims were from Bosnia and Herzegovina, describing the accident as “a major tragedy.” Bosnian media reported the expedition consisted of seven climbers from the city of Zenica, including a married couple and a female doctor employed at a local hospital.
Mount Elbrus is considered one of the Seven Summits, the highest mountain on each continent, attracting thousands of climbers every year. While technically less demanding than many Himalayan peaks, Elbrus is notorious for its rapidly changing weather, with powerful winds, whiteout conditions, and sudden temperature drops regularly turning routine ascents into life-threatening situations.
The mountain has claimed numerous lives over the years despite its popularity with guided expeditions and experienced mountaineers. High altitude, severe exposure, and unpredictable storms remain the greatest hazards on the peak.
Russian authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident. Rescue teams have now concluded the search, though officials said the recovery operation was significantly complicated by the continuing adverse weather conditions.
