5-Hr Rescue Saves Severely Injured Skier at Beartooth Pass, MT

A 21-year-old male skier took a nasty fall on the Gardner Headwall at Beartooth Pass, Montana on Sunday.  The skier was seriously injured in the fall.

Red Lodge Fire Rescue/Search & Rescue and the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the scene of the fall on Sunday.

The skier reportedly hit a rock while skiing and fell a long way down before landing inside a tight crevasse in the snowpack.  He suffered a severe leg injury in the fall.

It took rescue crews on the ground 5 hours to locate and remove the victim.  Heavy fog prevented the use of a helicopter in the operation.

The injured man was wearing a helmet at the time of the fall and is expected to make a full recovery.
