7 Skiers Die in Large Avalanche in Japan Yesterday

A large avalanche claimed 7 skier’s lives on Mt. Masago in Japan on Sunday.  The avalanche was 30m (100ft) wide and it ran for 600m (1,968ft) downslope.  It appears from this video that the avalanche was very deep.  Maybe even a 5-foot deep crown…

This avalanche occurred in a backcountry location.  It is not known wether or not these skiers had avalanche education, avalanche beacons, shovels, or probes.

Local police are searching the avalanche debris for other potential victims.  The names of the deceased have not yet been released released.
