The Lassen wolfpack has brought eight adorable pups into the world, the pack’s fourth litter. The litter consists of four confirmed males and two confirmed females, awaiting results on the other two pups. The Lassen pack stands as California’s only documented wolf pack and now sits at 14 animals total.
The pack has gained a new father figure this year, as the previous male disappeared last summer. The disappeared wolf was the famous OR-7, noted as being the first wild wolf in CA in the past 87 years.
In a quote by Amaroq Weiss, a senior West Coast wolf advocate at the Center for Biological Diversity. She says “These little ones give hope to everyone who wants to see wolves re-established in the places these beautiful animals once called home.” The Lassen pack is the second documented wolfpack in almost 100 years for California. The Shasta pack of wolves was verified in 2015 followed by a sudden disappearance of all seven wolves in 2016. Canis Lupus (Grey Wolf) are fully protected within California, they are not protected nearby across Oregon state lines.
The Lassen pack has had a litter every year since its confirmation in CA in 2017. In 2017 they had four pups, followed by five pups in 2018. 2019 brought four more beautiful pups, with eight being born this year. Some of these pups did not survive, unfortunately, and others have moved on to find space of their own. As wolfs typically do.
