Report from March 19, 2026

Yesterday, Main Chute on 11,068′ Mt. Baldy was open.

It was only the third day it’s been open all season.

It’s very rare that this beauty opens during the season, so when it does, you’ve got to get to Alta.

Main Chute is a world-class chute.

I showed up around 12:30 p.m. on Thursday with my neighbor Joe, knowing Main Chute had been open the day before.

In fact, on Wednesday, Main Chute, Little Chute, and Dogleg Chute were all open.

We jumped on the Collins and Sugarloaf chairs and made the 25-minute hike up to the top of Mt. Baldy, then slid down to the top of Main Chute.

It was looking good and drenched in light.

I chilled on top and let folks pick their way down.

Suddenly, I was alone on top, and the chute was totally empty.

Perfect…

I dropped in, struggled with the weird runneled moguls up top, then found a rhythm.

The goal was simple: top to bottom in under 60 seconds.

I smeared big, sliding turns, avoiding moguls where I could and keeping as much speed as possible down the chute.

I expected to get winded, but this season has been weird for me.

I haven’t done much uphill skiing at all, but I’ve been downhill skiing a ton (thanks, France!).

I was able to ski the entire chute without being totally spent and made it out of the base in under 60 seconds.

I was stoked.

Joe was slow hiking up, so I spun a lap on the Collins chair, then waited for him at the bottom.

We cranked Collins and Wildcat laps for a while, then called it around 3:30 p.m.

The High T was closed, so we didn’t get a crack at High Rustler, but I’ll be back for it next week.

After Alta, I went straight to F45 for a leg workout, and I’m still sore…

Thanks, Utah!
