Report from April 4, 2021
Alyeska has gotten more snow than any other ski resort in North America this season and maybe even in the world.
They’ve gotten 674″ of snowfall this season already and they ain’t done yet…
When I woke up this morning Alyeska, AK was reporting only 1″ of new snow but it was so snowy in the webcams, I couldn’t see anything but large snowflakes…
Alyeska doesn’t open until 11am right now so I figured, “why not be there for first chair?”
It was a good call.
The 1″ was more like 6″ up top.
It was a bit dust on crust, but the magic was that most all the new snow fell after the groomers did their work so you could ski perfectly groomed ski runs with 4-6″ of new snow on top and it was a blast.
On my first chair, I rode up Ted’s Express then jumped right onto the Glacier Express to the top and did a top to bottom powder groomer while singing out loud and smiling ear to ear.
I then met a cool cat named Doug who’d just been heli-skiing with Majestic Heli and we cranked another top to bottom lap and loved it.
After that, top to bottom runs were the name of the game – they take 5 full minutes…
Kids with jerseys on were everywhere doing everything trying to find the hidden Easter Eggs that were stashed all over the mountain.
The vibe out there was great.
I always think of Alaska as such a different land and it is, but the people are just like us: stoked to be on the mountain, elated to ski a storm.
Thank you for the great day, Alyeska!
