The Yosemite Rim Fire has now burned nearly 200,000 acres.  It’s strong, powerful, and relentless.  It doesn’t sleep, it just eats.  It’s a monster.

It’s very scary to see how close it is to Yosemite Valley.  Look and see how close and how the fire has progressed here:  http://tmappsevents.esri.com/website/rim-fire-perspectives-map/ (below map will be interactive)

See how the fire has progressed since August 17th, 2013. Darker colors represent more recent perimeters.

This video calms it down a bit and makes it appear beautiful.  And it is.  “Fire is the Earth’s cleaner.”  That statement is true enough, but 100+ year of fire suppression in the Sierra Nevada has created a stacked tinder box ready to burn.  This cleanse is a bit too deep and in such a beautiful area.

This is a series of timelapses of the Rim Fire growing rapidly between August 22nd and 27th shot from the Crane Flat Helibase and Glacier Point. This video was produced to look at the movement of the smoke from the fire. For more information and visualization of the Rim Fire visit:
