A snowmobiler was caught and injured by an avalanche near Independence Pass in Colorado yesterday.

A snowmobiler was killed after getting caught in an avalanche on Saturday in eastern Nevada.

Three snowmobilers were involved in the avalanche which occurred in the Castle Lake area of Lamoille Canyon on February 20, 2021, at approximately 11:53 am.

One of the snowmobilers was able to ride out and call for emergency services. The second snowmobiler sustained injuries during the avalanche and was evacuated from the area to receive medical attention.

The third person, a man whose name was not released, was confirmed deceased Sunday morning. Search and rescue crews had to suspend the recovery effort Saturday evening due to unstable snow conditions and limited visibility.

Lamoille Canyon Road was closed Sunday morning while crews continued the recovery effort. The man’s body was confirmed to have been recovered around 10:40 am and is the state’s first avalanche death this winter.

There have been 31 avalanche-related deaths in the US this winter, the worst figure since the 2013/14 season when 35 were killed.

  1. I looked at the CalTopo website. I assume it’s accurate, but who knows. You probably need the official USFS map to be certain.

    1. Please share whatever app or website that you are using. I mean a map that can decipher legality is something I need to use. THANK YOU
