This is part one of the Backcountry Safety Basics series, a four-part series on backcountry safety. The series will cover four basic tenets of backcountry safety: snow science, avalanche terrain, group dynamics, and avalanche forecasts.

The goal of this series is to provide baseline knowledge about how to stay alive in the backcountry. This is not a substitute for a certified AIARE avalanche course.

Check out part 1 here on snow science, and stay tuned over the course of this week for parts 2, 3, and 4, as well as a conclusion on Friday, July 31!
