According to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, a backcountry skier died in an avalanche near Silverton, CO on Sunday. The skier triggered an avalanche in an area known as ‘Sam’s Trees’, between Red Mountain Pass and the town of Silverton.

The avalanche occurred at an elevation of approximately 11,200ft. La Plata County Search & Rescue responded to the scene, where the confirmed the avalanche fatality. The avalanche was triggered by the skier and it marks the 7th avalanche death of the season and the 1st ski-related in 2018.
