Big Cottonwood Canyon, UT, temporarily closed on Saturday April 8, 2023, when an avalanche slid onto State Route 190 just after noon. The Utah Department for Transportation (‘UDOT’) closed the road in both directions, and uphill and downhill traffic had to be redirected.

State Route 190 had to be closed from the mouth to Cardiff (MP 10.7) due to the slide at Laurel Pines (MP 10). The closure comes just a day after Little Cottonwood experienced a historic closure due to heightened avalanche risk. State Route 210 has been closed for the majority of the week, with small windows for people leaving the resort after four days of total closure to all traffic.

It is anticipated that Big Cottonwood Canyon will experience closures from Sunday April 9 – Thursday April 13, 2023.

UDOT announced that the current plan will be for State Route 190 to be closed from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. during those days due to avalanche hazard.

Please be careful when traveling and plan ahead. Delays can be expected and you may be in stopped traffic until queues clear. The State Route 190 will be closed from the mouth to Cardiff (MP 10.7), however travel is permitted above Cardiff.

Please monitor UDOT’s updates on their website or on Twitter for updates and current status reports before traveling. Make sure you are prepared for sudden closures and plan ahead.
