This weekend, Saturday, May 10,ย Arapahoe Basin Ski Area in Colorado is bringing back one of its most electrifying events with Slush N’ Spokes, a human-powered downhill bike race on snow that promises adrenaline, camaraderie, and full-throttle fun.ย If youโ€™ve ever looked down a snowy ski run and thought, โ€œI should ride my bike down that,โ€ this event is your dream come true.

Set on High Noon, a blue-rated ski run known for its sweeping turns and moderate pitch, Slush Nโ€™ Spokes drops 60 brave riders into a Le-Mans-style startโ€”where racers begin on foot, dash to their bikes, mount up, and race elbow-to-elbow through the slush. Riders will need nerves of steel, a steady hand, and the kind of confidence that lets you ease off the brakes, pick up serious speed, and maybe even catch a little air off a natural roller.

Each contestant will get two laps on the course. The first lap is just a practice lap to get a feel for the terrain and how your bike handles on snow. The second lap is the real race. Categories are open to everyone 12 and older, with both an open and a womenโ€™s division. Riders are encouraged to bring whatever two-wheeled, human-powered bike they choose including fat bikes, downhill rigs, and trail bikes, as long as it has rubber tires (no ice spikes) and no motor (sorry e-bikers). Helmets are mandatory, and additional protective gear is strongly recommended for this rowdy descent.

The event is part race, part party. The base area will be buzzing with live music from 1:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. along with beer tents, and good vibes. Contestant sign-in is from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Guest Services, with the race window running from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The top racers will be crowned during the awards ceremony at 7:15 p.m. in Mountain Goat Plaza.

Please note: Advanced registration is required, and there are no cancellations or refunds. Bikes will be transported via snowcat basket, and while the A-Basin crew will do its best to protect them, participants assume the risk of any potential damage.

So, whether youโ€™re there to race or just to spectate and soak up the party atmosphere, Slush Nโ€™ Spokes is a unique celebration of spring, snow, and cycling you don’t want to miss.
