Boreal ski resort in Lake Tahoe, CA will be opening up for two days – June 18th & July 2nd – this summer on “The Glacier”. Boreal saw 514″ of snowfall this winter and they’ve been pushing what’s left of their snowpack into a big pile that they’ll be skiing and riding on this weekend.
Boreal does also have a new high-tech snowmaking system that can make snow all summer long. We aren’t sure if they’ll be using it this summer to assist “The Glacier”.
“Boreal/Woodward Tahoe has introduced technology that will allow snowboarders and skiers to ride on real snow all summer long at camp. The technology is dubbed the Snowfactory, which is based on a refrigeration process that is similar to air conditioning. Water is sprayed on the inside of an ice maker that is equipped with a double wall. The water then freezes completely, gets harvested, and is distributed throughout the slope. The water used to produce the snow is completely clean and free of biological content that would threaten the environment.” – Chris Wallner/SnowBrains
