A 43-year-old snowboarder has died after being reported missing in the La Plagne ski area on Saturday afternoon, March 28.
Rescue services of CRS La Plagne were alerted at around 2:15 p.m. on March 28, when rescue staff were informed of the skier’s disappearance. Initial investigations quickly identified the man’s last recorded use of a ski lift in the Bécoin sector, prompting search efforts to focus on that area.
Concurrently, another skier in the Bécoin sector reported discovering an unresponsive person off-piste and alerted mountain rescue teams. The rescue workers from La Plagne, supported by rescuers from the Modane mountain rescue centre, were dispatched to the scene. There was nothing they could do for the victim and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The victim, who was alone, was found in the late afternoon in the Bécoin sector. He fell about 100 meters (330 feet) from a rocky ledge,” a CRS Modane spokesperson told The Associated French Press (AFP) on Monday, March 30.
Police have confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding his death. There have been no details released aside from his nationality and age at this stage.
