Mammoth’s 60th Anniversay year got off to a great start this weekend, complete with good skiing, good coverage, good food, and good music.  They kept the early season stoke rolling as the masses made their way to Mammoth for a little weekend shredding.  Conditions remained great for early season, with well maintained and relatively rock free runs.

The longest the lines got, still very manageable

With the coming of the weekend so too came the weekend crowds, which meant rather than skating onto the chair you actually got to take a quick breather before heading back up for more of the goods.  The longest the lift lines got were roughly a 3-4 minute wait, which was just enough time for the legs to take a quick break.  And even with the increased crowds, the runs remained wide open for your shredding pleasure.

Despite the slight lines at the bottom, the runs were still empty

Friday night brought temperatures a bit too high for snow making, the groomers were still able to smooth out the tracks from the day before providing a nice smooth refresh.  With the increased crowds on Saturday there were few small rocks which started to poke out, but they remained on the far edges of the run off of Chair 3.  The skiing and riding on Broadway and ADG off of Chair 1 remained fun, fast, and very well covered.

There were a brave few who sampled the off piste offerings

While there were a few brave souls who sought out some off piste skiing, it is not recommended.  Anything off the beaten path was a bit, shall we say, beat.  The closest thing you could find to an off piste run was the skiers left side of ADG, where you could make a couple fun turns on a relatively steep pitch where some excess man made snow had settled.

The Unbound Terrain Park remained well groomed given the lack of natural snow, and Mammoth’s selection of rails and boxes kept the park kids more than content.

Mammoth’s food and bev department was also ready for the weekend masses, serving up a delicious number of options.  If you’re looking for a filling meal after your day of skiing, check out Sushi Rei.  They just underwent a complete revamp and it is now about as good as sushi gets.

Overall, Mammoth’s 60th anniversary opening weekend went very well, complete with surprising amounts of open terrain, a legitament park setup, and good eats.  And things are only set to get better as they continue their snow making operations, and more importantly continue their snow dance operations.
