Mount Robson is a prominent mountain in British Columbia, boasting the highest elevation in the Canadian Rockies and a rugged nature. The mountain has an impressive elevation of 12,972 feet or 3,954 meters, located in the Rainbow Range in a remote part of British Columbia. Earlier this month professional backcountry skiers Christina Lustenberger and Guillaume Pierrel conquered this feat on February 17 by skiing down what they dubbed the “Great Couloir.” This three-and-a-half-hour descent down the incredible technical line required extensive amounts of research on weather, conditions, and the mountain itself.
The south face route has often been recognized for its extreme technicality and discipline that would be required to ski it. Now the Great Couloir of the south face route has been skied marking an exceptional feat for the ski mountaineering community. Lines like this one require excellent judgment, planning, and technical skills to ensure safety. This was Christina Lustenberger and Guillaume Pierrel’s second attempt on the face after making it within 1,000 feet of the summit just a few days before the succeeding attempt.
This achievement marks another feat for Guillaume Pierrel and Christina Lustenberger adding to their impressive resume in the ski mountaineering scene and notching another note in the history books. This descent is sure to be an indication of what is to come for these two incredible athletes as they continue to stack their lists of successes.
