Arapahoe Basin, Colorado, known worldwide for its steep terrain, high-alpine energy, and famously long ski seasons, is once again making headlines for pushing well into summer. Nestled high on the western slope of the Continental Divide in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, A-Basin—affectionately called “A-Bay” by locals—sits at a base elevation of 10,520 feet and rises to a summit of 13,050 feet. That altitude pays off: the resort consistently ranks among the last ski areas to close in North America.
With its lofty location tucked deep in Dillon Valley and shielded from the intense Colorado sun, A-Basin tends to open early (often battling Keystone and Wolf Creek for first chair honors) and hold snow well into June—and sometimes July. Thanks to a string of cold nights and gray, snow-preserving days, the ski area announced on Wednesday, June 4, that it will extend its season for one more bonus weekend: June 13–15.
That means Father’s Day, Sunday, June 15, will now mark closing day at Arapahoe Basin.
Currently, the resort has paused midweek operations. For the remaining days, Black Mountain Express and Lenawee Express will spin from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., serving only intermediate and advanced terrain—no beginner runs are available for the rest of the season.
Meanwhile, another late-season favorite made its debut on Saturday, May 31: Lake Reveal, a shallow natural melt pond that emerges near the base area during the final weeks of spring skiing. Beloved for its impromptu pond skimming sessions, Lake Reveal is one of A-Basin’s quirkiest end-of-season traditions.
After A-Basin’s final turns on June 15, just two ski areas from the 2024–25 season will remain open:Mammoth Mountain in California and Beartooth Basin in Wyoming. Both are also expected to close that same day. That will leave Timberline Lodge on Oregon’s Mount Hood as the last outdoor ski area still operating in North America.
For those still chasing snow beyond that, Big Snow at American Dream Mall in New Jersey remains open year-round as the country’s only indoor ski and snowboard facility.
