Crystal Mountain, Washington, received its first measurable snow of the season yesterday, following a light dusting in August, with about 6 to 12 inches in the upper elevations. The ski resort posted a video on its social media of the snow falling and reported that the snow started falling Saturday night and was still falling Sunday morning. Approximately 7 inches of snow fell at the time of the social media post. It was the first snow of the season at the mountain that stuck to the ground.
Even though Crystal Mountain’s last weekend of its summer operations is next week, it seems that winter can’t wait to get started in the Pacific Northwest this season. “We are still open for summer operations, so come prepared for a true mountain weather day,” Crystal Mountain’s website said. “Expect snow and winter-like conditions on the upper mountain, cooler temperatures, and potentially slick surfaces.”
Meteorologist Chris Nunley posted a video and photos of Crystal Mountain, saying, “Heavy snow fell on top of Crystal in Washington – around a foot accumulated up top.” Around a foot fell on top of Crystal Mountain, with a couple of feet on the Volcanoes, Nunley said.
Crystal Mountain saw a trace of snow two weeks ago in August, not enough to be considered measurable, with accumulation visible in Northway, Mountain Top, and along the 9 side of the mountain, home to Forest Queen Express and Chair 6. A fresh dusting coated the surrounding peaks just off of Chair 6, with The Silver King taking most of the share. The snow was enough to stick and remains visible across the high alpine this morning, giving the mountain its first real hint of winter.
With a peak elevation of 7,012 feet and over 80 named runs, Crystal offers some of the most diverse skiing in the Pacific Northwest. It is Washington’s largest ski resort with more than 2,600 acres of terrain.
