A drunk Vermont tourist got into an argument with his friends at the Elks Country Inn in Jackson WY, stole a Pizza Hut delivery car, drove to the airport, bought a ticket to Chicago with cash, flew to Chicago, avoided the cops upon landing, went home safely, and he won’t be charged.  This all happened last Thursday.

According to the JH News & Guide, this actually happened, the cops know about it, and they’re gonna let him get away with it.

The details of the story are terrific…

21-year-old Quinn McElwain gets in an argument while drinking with buddies in the Elk Country Inn last Thursday.  Next thing you know, he’s gone and his buddies report him missing to the cops.  An hour later, the cops get another call that a Toyota RAV4 has been stolen while left running right in front of the Elk Country Inn.

Ok, so the friends told the cops they thought Quinn might go to the airport and fly out and the cops put the missing person situation and the stolen car case together.

“We figured that they would be related.  We received some information from his party that it’s possible he’d leave the area and would try to fly out.” – Lt. Cole Nethercott, Jackson Police told the JH News & Guide

The best part is that the cops in Jackson inform the cops in Chicago, they wait for Quinn at the gate Chicago (where he flew), but they wait at the wrong gate & miss him.  They miss the guy.  They went to the wrong gate!

The drunk guy from Vermont steals a car, buys a last minute flight to Chicago and gets away!

“For whatever reason, they ended up at the wrong gate and they missed him.” – Lt. Cole Nethercott, Jackson Police told the JH News & Guide

The cops gave the Pizza Hut delivery guy a ride to his car in the airport parking lot and nothing had been stolen from it.  Classy.

What’s great is that Quinn’s crime doesn’t fit felony grand theft auto as he didn’t permanently deprive the owner of the vehicle, according to Nethercott.

Nethercott informed the JH News & Guide that Quinn could be charged with “unauthorized use” (joy-riding) of the Pizza Hut delivery car.

What’s really great is that Quinn won’t be charged because Jackson isn’t gonna pay to have Quinn extradited back to Jackson as it would be a waste of taxpayer monies.

“We’d be interested in charging him with it.  The question is always if the prosecutor’s office would pay for him to be extradited back here.” – Lt. Cole Nethercott, Jackson Police told the JH News & Guide
