A significant early-season snowfall has transformed Mount Mawson in Tasmania’s Mount Field National Park, Australia, with up to 30–40 cm (12-16 inches) of fresh snow reported over the weekend — an unusually strong fall for mid-April.

The resort, still officially in its pre-season phase, reported fresh snow conditions on Monday, April 13, with limited access and no lift operations yet underway. While snow play is currently possible, volunteers working at the small club ski field warn that the recent accumulation may not last long due to warmer ground temperatures typical of early autumn in Tasmania. Given the transient nature of the snowfall, visitors keen for some snow play are encouraged to head up sooner rather than later if they want to experience the rare April snow.

Please note that access to the area has been significantly affected by the conditions, with the club ski area confirming that Lake Dobson Road was closed to all traffic beyond the Visitor Centre on Friday. The lower sections, including the Waterfalls Café area and Visitor Centre, remain accessible, as does the Tall Trees carpark. However, large amounts of snow on the road can make travel hazardous and Tasmanian Police are urging those planning on setting out to check for current road status before setting out.

The snowfall, which began building on April 11, has continued intermittently, with heavy out-of-season accumulation surprising both visitors and locals. Images shared from the mountain show a rare early-season winter landscape forming across the alpine zone.

Despite the snowfall, resort operators have stressed that conditions remain pre-season, and infrastructure is not yet prepared for skiing or lift operations. Snow play, however, is definitely encouraged.
