It’s not news to anyone that Colorado is in dire need of snow. At the halfway point in December Eldora Mountain Resort in Boulder County, Colorado, sits at just under 60% of its annual snowpack.
But that’s not stopping locals, like me, from looking to sneak in turns and a workout under a beautiful morning sunrise after the resort opened early-season uphilling access.
Arriving just before uphill access opened for business at 7 a.m., the bottom section of “Bonanza” was already filling up. From legit endurance athletes to your average Joes like my coworker Jasper and me, one thing was consistent: everyone was wearing a smile.
The uphill section starts steep, and then transitions into a cat track through Jolly Jugs glades. Here, the mix between freshly groomed man-made snow turns into what natural base Eldora has, along with rocks, broken tree branches, and dirt.
Despite the spotty snow conditions on the skin track, the ascent was the perfect distance for those looking for a brisk workout, just over 1,000 vertical feet. Eldora sits just 30 minutes from the heart of Boulder, giving local skiers the opportunity to get in a few thousand human-powered vertical feet in before work or school.
Currently, only 44 of Eldora’s 358 acres are open for skiing and riding, leaving terrain options limited. The snow this morning was fantastic, though. A firm, fast surface meant a quick descent back to the car before the workday.
Please note that due to a high wind warning, Eldora uphill access operations will be closed on Wednesday, December 17. Also note that uphill access is limited to weekdays. Always check the mountain conditions for the most up-to-date information.
