One of Europeโ€™s few glacier ski resorts is getting a second chance.

After declaring bankruptcy in fall 2024, Folgefonna Glacier Ski Resortโ€”known for offering skiing in the middle of summer and referred to by locals as only “Fonna”โ€”is preparing to reopen this May under new ownership. A new company, Fonna Sport AS, has stepped in to take over the operation, backed by regional ski associations and members of Norwayโ€™s ski community.

Located on the Folgefonna glacier in western Norway, the resort is one of the countryโ€™s most unique training grounds for alpine skiers and snowboarders. With reliable snow into the summer and sweeping views of the surrounding fjords, it has long drawn national teams, youth clubs, and international visitors.

Following the bankruptcy of former operator Visit Fonna AS, the future of the glacier resort was uncertain. But local advocates rallied to preserve it, forming Fonna Sport AS in partnership with the Hordaland Ski Association and Agder & Rogaland Ski Association, the resort shared on social media.ย The new organization is now working with the bankruptcy trustee to acquire the lift systems and critical equipment needed to relaunch operations.

If successful, the lifts could begin spinning again by May 2025, just in time for the annual summer ski season. The new leadership group wrote on social media that the resort will focus on access for athletes, youth programs, and community events, while also welcoming skiers from abroad who are looking for off-season training or a one-of-a-kind alpine experience.

Folgefonna is one of just a handful of resorts in Europe where skiing continues into the summer, thanks to its high elevation and glacier base. Itโ€™s not a massive resort by U.S. standards, but its timing and terrain make it a critical venue for training and technique work.
