High winds and heavy snow and rain caused many European ski areas to close yesterday, closing lifts and raising the avalanche risk.

Tignes and Val d’Isère, in the French Alps, closed chairlifts and gondolas for safety reasons. The avalanche risk was also raised to level 5, the highest level.

Tourists in Tignes were advised to stay indoors all morning.

Other French resorts did manage to open later in the day, although the risk of avalanche was still high.
