Getting paid to drink beer and hike the Appalachian Trail may sound too good to be true, but the Devil’s Backbone Brewing Company is hiring someone to do just that as a Chief Hiking Officer. The duties of this dream job include hiking the entire 2,000 mile Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine, sleeping under the stars, creating social media content, and of course, drinking beer.

The perks of the position of Chief Hiking Officer include a $20,000 stipend, free backpacking gear, a free flight to the trailhead, promotional parties, and of course, free beer. To qualify for the position, applicants must be experienced hikers, craft beer aficionados, social media experts, and prepared to spend around six months backpacking the Appalachian Trail in 2021.

The Devil’s Backbone Brewing Company is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia at mile marker 842 of the Appalachian Trail. Founded by Steve and Heidi Crandall, one of the brewery’s core philosophies is being slow by nature. This philosophy is shared by many of the through-hikers that visit the brewery on rest days. Hayes Humphreys, the Chief Operating Officer, says, “These folks really understand how life-altering it is to slow down and take in what’s going on around you.”
