It’s Valentine’s Day, love is in the air, and what better way to spend the day than on the slopes sharing some turns with your significant other? For some, this is a reality—your significant other loves skiing just as much as you do. But for others, it is a struggle sharing time on the snow.

We want to help you get your lover on the hill, so here are some tips on how to get your significant other hooked on skiing.

Tip 1: Make Sure They Are Warm

Nothing is worse than being cold while skiing, so making sure your significant other is dressed appropriately is key to helping them have the best time on the mountain. On the cold days, make sure they are layered up. Base-layers, mid-layers, and a waterproof outer layer should do the trick. On warmer, slushier spring days, just a nice mid-layer should keep your significant other plenty warm enough to have a great day.

Tip 2: Invest in Some Crash Pants

Crashing is never fun, especially on icy days when the pack is harder. Taking your significant other home, full of bruises, is sure to scare them away from the sport, especially if they are a beginner. Getting them a pair of crash pants could be the difference between an awful day and a great day on skis.

Crash pants are a padded, protective pair of compression shorts that go underneath the snowpants. They provide padding on the tailbone, hips, and thighs to soften impacts. They are typically very lightweight and help beginners build confidence as they continue to improve their skiing.

Tip 3: Make Sure They Are Well-Fed

Making sure your significant other is well-fed throughout the day on the slopes is important for keeping their energy up, allowing for a full day of skiing. Skiing is very intensive and burns way more energy than people expect. Bracing legs, getting up after falling, and carrying gear are all energy-intensive, especially for new skiers.

Eating beforehand is key to starting the day with a good amount of energy. Bringing a few snacks for during the day, or eating in the lodge, ensures that energy is replenished to keep your loved one powering through the day on the hill.

Tip 4: Do Not Start With Black Diamond Runs

We know how tempting that black diamond run is. You want to carve up that challenging run and want to look awesome while doing it. But trust us, you do not want to bring your significant other there, unless they are truly ready.

If your significant other is just a beginner, it might be perfect to start on the bunny hill. Anything with a magic carpet will do, just so they can get the basics of turning down. Once they start lacing those turns and the stoke starts to pick up, then it might be time to hit the lifts.

These are just some basic tips for helping your significant other get hooked on skiing. Once they start getting more confident and enjoying their time on the hill, they will get hooked in no time and will be begging to get back out there with you again.
