A Winter Storm Watch is still in effect for northern California today, with multiple FEET in the forecast between now and the weekend. There should be a brief respite on Sunday, before kicking off again on Monday with a couple more feet of snow.

With extreme snow comes increased avalanche risk. NWS Sacramento has issued avalanche warnings, which following recent slides in the area, we know are for real.

Lots of information is available for the skiers and snowboarders, but most people driving up to tahoe and mammoth don’t look at avalanche conditions because they don’t think avalanches will occur in the ski resort boundaries. Just an idea for resorts to avoid what occurred at squaw and mammoth last storm cycle, how about posting NOAA’s weather and avalanche advisory at the ticket office so the consumer can make an informed decision before purchasing a lift ticket.
    I absolutely guarantee that squaw and mammoth will be sued by the people caught in the avalanche. The simple fact is that squaw valley should have not opened the mountain that day based on the avalanche advisory issued by Sierra avalanche center and NOAA. It was simply to dangerous that day to open. All of those people who survived the avalanche are extremely lucky that they are alive. Andy wirth are you listening ?
    Better to make a buck than risk your customers lives , doesn’t common sense count anymore ?
