Hickory Ski Center, a beloved small ski area in Warrensburg, New York, will not open for the upcoming winter season, according to an announcement shared by the ski area on Facebook. With fall turning to winter and snow beginning to dust the Adirondacks, many locals had hoped to “ski the legend” once again—flying up the vintage Poma lift and exploring Hickory’s iconic backcountry-style glades. However, the mountain confirmed that there are currently no plans to operate for the 2025-26 winter.

“Our hope is that as a new management model unfolds, Hickory will again be a place for families to gather, friends to connect, and kids to learn to ski,” the announcement stated.

Hickory has also closed the mountain to public access for hiking, skinning, snowshoeing, disc golf, and camping. Limited reserved group use may be available upon request, but individual recreation will not be permitted during this transitional period.

Construction work is scheduled to take place at the base lodge, and a new website is being developed to reflect what the team calls “new beginnings for The Legend.” The ski area’s current website will be deactivated around November 1, and its social media presence will undergo changes in the coming months.

Founded in 1945, Hickory Ski Center is known for its old-school charm, steep terrain, and Poma lifts that have carried generations of skiers up its wooded slopes. Despite limited snowmaking and operations over the past decade, the mountain has maintained a loyal following of passionate locals who cherish its rugged character and family-run spirit.

As Hickory enters this new phase, the message from its operators is one of gratitude and optimism. “Thanks everyone for being part of the Hickory story that created the Legend,” owner Sue Catana shared in the announcement, signing off with appreciation for the community that has kept the mountain’s legacy alive.
