Hiker Killed by Rockfall in Mt. Rainier National Park, WA

A 75-year-old man was found dead in Mount Rainier National Park near Eagle Peak Trail Thursday.  

Rockfalls were reported in the area he was found.

It’s currently unclear if the man fell or was struck by falling rocks.

“He was by himself.  Because nobody saw where he went or what happened, I’m not sure we’re going to have a whole lot of answers.” –  Patti Wold, park spokeswoman

Patti Wold went on to explain that the deceased man had separated from his group and was traveling off-trail at the time of his death.

After he was reported missing at 1:30pm Thursday.  Several hikers reported a rockfall at about 4:30pm Thursday.  A helicopter crew spotted him, extracted his body, and confirmed that he was dead.  His body was taken to the Pierce County Medical Examiner.

The Eagle Creek Trail gains access the the Tattoosh Range just south of 14,411′ Mt. Rainier.
