Growing up in Hartford, Connecticut, my family chose Okemo Mountain Resort in Vermont as the place we’d spend the next 10 winters exploring together. We weren’t chasing bottomless powder or hucking huge cliffs; we were soaking up family time on the hill, learning to love skiing for what it really is: cold, simple, and full of heart.
After college, moving from central Connecticut to a tight-knit mountain town was a real shift. Ludlow is a proud community with character, filled with people who genuinely care about their mountain and their neighbors. It’s a place that’s incredibly easy to fall in love with.

Okemo itself delivers the classic Southern Vermont experience. Rising to 3,344 feet with a base at 1,144 feet, Okemo boasts 667 skiable acres, 20 lifts, 123 trails, and 98 % snow-making coverage. Some days you’re battling icy wind and New England grit, but other days you’re ripping Chief on a freshly groomed morning and remembering exactly why this place hooks people for life. Families, kids, locals, and ski racers all share the same runs, pushing each other and creating a mountain culture that’s both welcoming and motivating.
Catching A or B Quad first thing in the morning meant getting hit with the smell of fresh waffles drifting from the waffle cabin, one of those small Okemo traditions you can’t miss. Take the Sunburst Six for high-speed groomer laps, or head to South Face for ungroomed terrain, tree skiing, and double black diamonds.

But the mountain is only half the story; just down the small access road onto Main Street, Ludlow is where the real soul lives. Food? Music? Beer? Cocktails? Vibes? This town has it all.
Walking into Main & Mountain around Christmas when it transforms into a Miracle Bar, tossing back whiskey shots and wings at Killarney’s, ending your day at The Loft shooting Buck Hunter, or stopping into Eight Oh Brew to choose from 30 taps of local Vermont beer—it’s all part of the après-ski charm that makes this town so special to me. Everything is within walking distance (if you’re bold enough), and everything has character. And if you’re lucky, you’ll run into local music artist Sammy B, who’s always bringing the stoke wherever he performs.

The food scene is its own adventure, Singletons for stacked sandwiches, Outer Limits for crisp craft beers, Homestyle for true farm-to-table comfort, Killarney’s for their famous Comp Sauce wings, and Goodman’s for wood-fired perfection. But the heart of the season is the summer farmers market every Sunday, where local growers, bakers, artists, and neighbors all come together. It’s the kind of gathering that shows exactly why Ludlow feels so genuine and welcoming.
Ski mountains and ski towns aren’t only about powder days or steep lines. They’re about the energy on your off-days and the people who make you want to stick around. Okemo is where I learned what a real mountain community looks like: lively without being flashy, proud without being pretentious, and endlessly welcoming.
It’s the kind of place that stays with you long after you leave!
