Recently, we posted a question on Facebook: how much money would it take for you to never ski again? We ended up getting some pretty interesting answers from our readers. While the majority of our readers commanded a very steep price to quit one of their favorite hobbies, others found some unique workarounds to both profit from and continue doing what they love. Here are a handful of the responses we received regarding a question that truly divided our audience.
One of our readers said: “No amount of $$$ compares to an epic pow run. After a cancer diagnosis, I don’t think about how much $$$ I’ve made; I think about time spent on the slopes with my buddies.” Along that same mindset, another reader responded saying, ” SKIING IS LIFE. No amount of money would be worth leaving it.”
Some of our other viewers took a different approach, stating they would be happy to swap out the skis for a snowboard or snowmobile, or even a completely different seasonal sport. One reader said, “$2 million. But, I can still snowboard, right?” Another reader followed up by saying, “For $10 BILLION…I suppose I could learn to enjoy snowmobiles instead. Wouldn’t be easy, though.” “$5 million so I can afford to golf anywhere I want,” was another interesting response.
Others just wanted to take the money and run. “$1.7 billion would do the trick,” said one reader, while another said, “given that I just lost a career, I’d commit for $1 million.” Others joked about their preference for snowboarding, saying it wouldn’t make the decision any harder. “Someone gave me a snowboard in 1987, that’s all it took. No money needed,” a reader said.
The question clearly made some people’s brains hurt. One reader even said, “might be the most philosophically difficult question I’ve ever been asked. I’m in an existential crisis till I can answer this.” While we certainly enjoyed the varied answers, we hope the existential crises didn’t last too long.
