Jackson Hole Mountain Resort said the Aerial Tram, known as Big Red, is scheduled to begin operations on December 18 after new snowfall and a longer-duration storm pushed mountain totals high enough for upper-mountain access. Snow levels are expected to hover between 6,500 and 7,000 feet from late Thursday into Friday before dropping to the valley floor with a cold front Friday night.
More than four feet of snow are projected for the current storm cycle, according to OpenSnow. The resort has recorded 106 inches of snowfall this season, with 42 inches arriving in the past two weeks and supporting widespread terrain expansion across the mountain.
The Aerial Tram climbs 4,139 vertical feet from Teton Village to the summit of Rendezvous Mountain, offering access to big-mountain terrain, sweeping 360-degree views, and Corbet’s Cabin. The summit, often referred to as the Top of the World, is a central draw for skiers and riders seeking Jackson Hole’s signature high-alpine experience.
JHMR will mark its 60th anniversary on Friday with discounted lift tickets, live music, and a retro costume party at the Tram Dock. The celebration, presented by Smartwool, includes $60 lift tickets, partner activations, retail discounts, and a village lighting ceremony as part of the WinterFest kickoff. Lodging specials are available at locations both in town and slopeside.
Resort staff are urging guests to ski and ride cautiously as early-season conditions remain on parts of the mountain. Lift schedules may shift based on weather, including wind, snowfall, and avalanche mitigation work. Backcountry gates surrounding the resort will remain closed until conditions improve enough to support a feasible search-and-rescue response.
