American skateboarder Josh Neuman has been killed along with three other men after a sightseeing plane crashed into a lake in Iceland. His family confirmed the accident in a statement, saying he died “doing what he loved.”

The 22-year-old had witnessed the northern lights shortly before his passing, according to the statement.

Icelandic officials located the bodies of the men at a depth of 157-feet in the country’s second-largest lake, Thingvallavatn, although poor weather has hampered the recovery. A 1,000-person search and rescue operation was launched when their plane disappeared Thursday without sending a distress signal.

Neuman was on the flight for a photoshoot for Belgian fashion brand Suspicious Antwerp. Also onboard was Tim Alings, the company’s sponsorship manager, 27, Nicola Bellavia, a 32-year-old skydiver and social media influencer from Belgium, and the pilot, Haraldur Diego, 49.

Los Angeles-based Neuman was famous for his skating videos that showed him speeding downhill through scenic routes worldwide and has one of the most-watched skateboarding videos on YouTube.
