Julian Lopez Escapes Avalanche in Alps, Then Gets Clobbered, & Buried for 5 Minutes

Julian Lopez is lucky to be alive.  5 minutes is a very very long time to be buried in an avalanche.

Julian Lopez is a madman on skis.  Very few people have the skill to recognize and outrun an avalanche as quickly as he does in this video.  He does a great job getting away from it until he encounters some weird snow conditions, gets going too fast and falls.

That’s when the avalanche catches up with him and clobbers him.  He’s subsequently buried for 5 minutes before be dug out by friends.  It appears that he’s totally ok after this as he hops into the heli and flies away.

Lets all put avalanches in the back of our minds as we look ahead to snow season.  Lets all be safe out there

  1. Definitely gotta put avalanches more then in the back of your mind. I know this is from 2013 but with people dying daily in the Alps currently, its time to understand when you can and can’t be in terrain like. No more ignorance in this matter. Putting yourself in terrain like this is a personal choice many of us make, and one should be well versed in the consequences and possibilities before doing so. Get educated
