It was damn cold skinning up high in a cold wind with clouds occluding the sun.
By the top, I’d warmed a touch from the walk and locked into the chute I’d planned on skiing.
Somewhat randomly, this trip has turned into a little project where I’m trying to ski all of the chutes on this wall.

I’ve now skied 6 of them (one of them twice), and I’ve got 2 little ones to go.
Yesterday was #5.
The chute started fine with clean powder snow before I got funneled into the chute proper.

In the gut of the chute, previous riders had hammered and sluffed it hard, and I barely kept it together.
The lower chute was nice again, and the apron was a powerhound’s dream.
I skinned into a new zone from the base of the chute and found exactly what I wasn’t looking for.

All the terrific north-facing chutes we’ve been enjoying were blasted by the wind.
Weird, wind-affected snow that had formed firm wind slabs on top of soft snow, and it just sucked…
The magical week of everything being plastered in 24″ of epic powder has officially come to an end.

That said, there’s still plenty of high-quality snow out there, ya just have to sniff it out.
Again, be extra careful as folks are still kicking off and taking rides in avalanches left and right around here.
What a week!
Thanks, BC!
