The Beast of the East, Killington Resort, VT, announced yesterday that they would be postponing their opening day due to unseasonably high temperatures. The largest resort on the east coast was scheduled to open this weekend, Saturday 14th November.

Record-breaking temperatures hovering in the 60s and 70s have prevented the resort from snowmaking, meaning they will not be able to open the top-to-bottom terrain required for effective ‘snowcially distanced skiing’.

Opening Day Update: Originally slated for Saturday, November 14 (weather and terrain permitting), Opening Day will be pushed back. Temps here in Killington hovered in the 60s and 70s this weekend and will remain high through the week meaning snowmaking is on hold. At this time, it’s hard to anticipate when Opening Day will be because unlike past years, we need top-to-bottom terrain with access to multiple base lifts before we can spin lifts for snowcially distanced skiing and riding. The team is monitoring the extended forecast with plans to make snow whenever temps allow.

As a reminder, parking reservations are now live with available bookings beginning Nov. 23 through the season. As we approach a newly confirmed Opening Day, we will release inventory for Opening Day through Nov. 22 to season pass holders (including Ikon) only. We will not offer access to non-passholders prior to November 23.

The resort has not offered any clue as to when they will open, their fate being totally in the hands of the weather gods.

Last season, Killington opened on 3rd November 2019, the first eastern resort to do so. This season, that title might just go to Mount Snow, VT, who are still targeting an opening day of Saturday 14th, 2020.

Wow, what a dumb statement! You think that the “unseasonably high temperatures” somehow don’t apply to Mt. Snow, and that they will be able to open this weekend even though they’re at both a lower elevation and a lower latitude than Killington?
