German cyclist Laura Viktoria Härtig has died, 19 days after a head-on collision with a motorcycle on a mountain pass in Italy’s Dolomites. She was 30.
Härtig died Monday, July 13, at a specialized clinic in Murnau, Germany, near her hometown of Penzberg in Bavaria. Doctors had transferred her there on July 9 from San Maurizio Hospital in Bolzano, Italy, where she had been treated since the crash.
The Sella Pass cycling accident occurred June 23 on the SS242 state road at the Sella Pass, a mountain route connecting the Val Gardena and Val di Fassa valleys. Härtig was cycling downhill toward Canazei when, at a bend in the road, her bicycle struck an oncoming motorcycle head-on.
The motorcycle was ridden by Peter Runggaldier, 57, a former Italian alpine ski racer from nearby Selva di Gardena. The impact was severe enough to break Härtig’s bicycle in two.

Emergency crews, including teams from Trentino Emergenza and Aiut Alpin Dolomites, reached the scene within minutes and resuscitated her before airlifting her to Bolzano. Runggaldier was also injured and was flown by helicopter to Santa Chiara Hospital in Trento. His injuries were not life-threatening.
Prosecutors in Trento are investigating the crash. Local reports indicate authorities are examining whether charges, potentially including vehicular manslaughter, are warranted. Runggaldier had already been under investigation for causing serious injury.
Who Was Laura Viktoria Härtig?
Härtig and her husband, Tilman, married in the Dolomites just days before the crash, choosing the mountains for both their wedding and the start of their honeymoon. The couple had reportedly returned to the region for a cycling trip when the collision occurred.
Härtig was an avid mountain biker and hiker who documented her outdoor pursuits on Instagram, where her account, “alltimelaura,” drew more than 51,000 followers. Her recent posts included images from her wedding.
Runggaldier competed for Italy’s national ski team from 1988 to 2000, specializing in downhill and super-G. He won the silver medal in downhill at the 1991 World Championships in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Austria, and claimed the World Cup Super-G discipline title in the 1994-95 season. He stood on the World Cup podium 12 times, with two victories, and competed at the 1994 and 1998 Winter Olympics. He now runs the competition center at the Selva ski school; his daughter, Teresa Runggaldier, currently races on the World Cup circuit.
Härtig’s death adds to a string of cyclist fatalities on Italian roads this summer. The Sella Pass, a popular stretch for road and mountain bikers, sees heavy motorcycle and car traffic during the summer tourist season.
The exact cause of the collision remains under investigation. Authorities have not yet released a full reconstruction of the crash.
The Sella Pass and Its Ski Areas
The Sella Pass sits at the heart of the Sellaronda, the Dolomites’ famed four-pass ski circuit that links the resorts of Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Arabba and Val di Fassa around the Sella massif. In winter, the pass forms one leg of the roughly 26-kilometer ski route, groomed and lift-served under a single Dolomiti Superski pass. In summer, the same road draws cyclists, motorcyclists and hikers, with the SS242 serving as a key link between Selva in Val Gardena and Canazei in Val di Fassa — the same stretch where Härtig’s accident occurred. The Dolomiti Superski area even reserves the road exclusively for cyclists twice a year during the Sellaronda Bikedays, though the crash did not occur during one of those closures.
